It was old boys` weekend in Ormstown and for the first time in many years there were more old boys out than young guns and it showed on the field as the old boys took back their title after having lost the previous two years. It was great to see many of them play again and one thing is for sure it would be great to still have some of the "old boys" playing with us on a regular basis.
This weekend was not only about the old boys but also a bout a young Saracens 1st team with one goal in mind, finishing in the top two and promotion into the Premier next year. With a 6-1-1 record all was still possible as our closes competition for top spots faced difficult adversaries this weekend. Our competition was not any easier as faced the Brome Lake Ducks who are so unpredictable it is difficult to find a weakness to exploit.
Like always games vs the Ducks are intense, low scoring, and entertaining. This year was no different as we managed to come up with some creative 1st half scoring drives initiated by great back row play. With a marginal half-time lead of 22-8 and the wind in our face for the 2nd half we knew it would be extremely difficult to hold off the Ducks from scoring as we could not solidify any of our set pieces. Not to mention every breakdown was an intense battle where more often than not the Ducks came away with the ball. That being said the Ducks were unable to keep us pined in our territory and were able to hold on to our lead and win the game 22-20.
The win is great, not getting the try bonus after missing 3 or 4 scoring opportunities in the game is not easy to take but this young team is learning how to win close games and we will take that over a bonus point any day.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Scott McClintock
SARACENS I (22) DUCKS (20)
