On a rain soaked day 35 Saracens travelled to Twin Elm Rugby Park to face the Ottawa Beavers. Our 2nd team kicked off at noon and battled hard the first half score was 5-5 and things were looking promising. During the 2nd half the young Saracens II were unable to capitalize on a several line breaks and the game ended 12-20 in favour of the Beavers II. It was great to see the competitive spirit of this young team and scores from rookies Gerrit VanBlankers and Russell Meloche.
---------
Our 1st team faced the same conditions as the 2nd's and a much larger pack than they were used to seeing in Quebec. It seemed as though all the Beavers I forwards were over 6' tall and 250-75 pounds. With that in mind and the rainy conditions it was going to be a game that favoured the Beavers' forwards. Throughout the game that was the case as the Beavers dominated the restarts.
What the Saracens lack in size, they definitely do not lack in heart. The Saracens defended their goal-line brilliantly and after several attempts by the Beavers to punch the ball through with pick-and-goes, the Saracens were able to make the big hits and clear their line. Having capitalized on a chip kick and a penalty they took the lead 12-0 at half.
The 2nd half was in the same image as the 1st where the Saracens could not win their scrums and the line-outs began as well. Penalties were also the order of the 2nd half where it seemed like the Saracens had one against every 2 min. This serious lack of discipline lead to 2 yellow cards and playing 1 player short for a good part of the final 25min of play.
With all the penalties and lack of secure balls at the restart, the Beavers were only able to score 10 points. The Saracens on the other hand continued to make big hits and capitalize on the Beavers' errors scoring 2 more tries in the last 15min to secure the bonus point. Final score 27-10 for Saracens I.
