A battle of the Trenches

Both men's teams faced RCM on a sunny day in Ormstown. Everyone knew that both games were going to be a battle from start to finish. The Saracens would have to take their lumps and make their opponents pay on the scoreboard and that's exactly what they did.

Saracens II kicked off at 1:30 and it was tough going from start. Both teams played in the middle of the pitch for good part of the half with only a couple incursions by either team near the try line. RCM applied constant pressure on our goal line, and were able to punch the ball in, half time score 3-7 in favour of RCM II.

The 2nd half was no different from the first as both teams continued to battle hard, however this time Ormstown was able to capitalize on a couple opportunities near RCM's goal line and scored two crucial tries. It was the 2nd try that sealed the match for the young Saracens II, as they stole a crucial line-out on RCM's 5meter line and Kyle Cullen crossed the line to score with only minutes left. Final score 13-12 for Saracens II!

The 1st team game witnessed the same type of battle against a solid RCM team, a large part of it was played between the 22`s. Ormstown had several opportunities early on but were unable to capitalize on those opportunities or provide a solid set piece from which to attack.

The Saracens gave away too many attacking opportunities in 1st 20min of play either by kicking the ball away or failed restarts which would motivate RCM to apply constant pressure. The only points in the 1st half came from taking advantage of RCM`s mistakes where Shawn Blair stole a quick line out throw by RCM and scored a try and Jason Aldridge kicked a penalty. Half time score 10-0 for Ormstown.

The 2nd half was played like the first, RCM barely crossing into Saracens territory and the Saracens not capitalizing on its field position. The game was a defensive battle from start to finish. In the final moments of the game the Saracens finally won a clean set piece, had the ball out wide and scored. Although the team did not perform as well as they had hoped, they finally go that elusive shut out against a formidable opponent. Final score 17-0 for Saracens I.
